![]() Machado calls her memoir In The Dream House to show the transformation of the cabin she shared with her ex-girlfriend from the home of her dreams to a house of nightmares. In this chapter, Machado portrays domestic abuse as imprisonment. Listening to Machado's chapter “Choose Your Own Adventure ” from her memoir In The Dream House resonated with my own pain, uncertainty and isolation. My aunt’s physical, emotional and mental violence created a monster in me what she did hurt me so deeply that it still haunts me and will not let me leave in peace. I was a minor and therefore not able to do anything until my mom came from my home country, and none of my family members outside of her household wanted to help because they did not believe that she would do such things. She always put me down in front of all her other kids, and I was given chores while others were outside enjoying the weather. I lived with my aunt and a family of five for five years, during which she physically and mentally abused me. I was only eleven years old when I arrived in the United States from the Dominican Republic to live with one of my mother's sisters. ![]() Carmen Maria Machado’s chapter “Dream House as Choose Your Own Adventure ” from her novel In The Dream House read by Zoë Winters as Act Two: You Can’t Go Your Own Way of episode 703-“Stuck!” of the radio program This American Life. ![]() ![]() ![]() In fact, she doesn’t have any female friends, and the moment she’s suspected of being unchaste, the ton turns on her as if she were a smoker lighting up in church. Linnet is the heroine of a fairy tale-so naturally she’s as beautiful as the sun and the moon. I’m not sure what question to ask here, but if anyone wants to talk about how parents can mess up a good marriage, feel free to leap in. ![]() Neither of these lessons was easily learned. If I had to nail down two things that were absolutely essential to the hero and heroine actually surviving marriage together, it would be that Piers had to reconcile with his father, and Linnet had to understand that Piers loved her for more than her beauty. This novel goes in a lot of different directions. Then have another drink and get down to brass tacks: so, who has had a run-in with an impotent man? All details welcome. First, agree among yourselves that I did a clever job of shifting the whole question of superficial beauty to deeper questions of the body. But Linnet and Piers are telling lies that aren’t exactly flattering: Linnet is claiming to be pregnant, and Piers is boasting of impotence. That’s not exactly abnormal-I had my future husband convinced that I was sweet, supportive, and a fabulous cook (I learned a lot from watching soaps). ![]() At the beginning of When Beauty Tames the Beast, neither Linnet nor Piers is strictly truthful with each other. ![]() ![]() His own extraordinary education in space has taught him some counterintuitive lessons: don't visualize success, do care what others think, and always sweat the small stuff. Through eye-opening, entertaining stories filled with the adrenaline of launch, the mesmerizing wonder of spacewalks and the measured, calm responses mandated by crises, he explains how conventional wisdom can get in the way of achievement - and happiness. Hadfield takes readers deep into his years of training and space exploration to show how to make the impossible possible. In An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, Col. Hadfield's success - and survival - is an unconventional philosophy he learned at NASA: prepare for the worst - and enjoy every moment of it. During this time he has broken into a Space Station with a Swiss army knife, disposed of a live snake while piloting a plane, and been temporarily blinded while clinging to the exterior of an orbiting spacecraft. ![]() ![]() Colonel Chris Hadfield has spent decades training as an astronaut and has logged nearly 4,000 hours in space. ![]() ![]() ![]() We’ve seen what happens when a pedophile gets a “soft sentence,” when the police fail to investigate serious allegations of sexual abuse or, worst of all, when the wrong person is convicted. While society likes to believe that the criminal justice system always gets it right, the reality is that it is inherently flawed. As you read, you’ll learn how barristers must often present cases with incomplete information, how untrained volunteers once decided who goes to jail, and how politicians and the media tend to paint the criminal justice system in an inaccurate light. From the criminals to the lawyers, the victims, witnesses, and more, the Secret Barrister reveals the best and worst of humanity and how the broken system affects all who enter it. For instance, how do you defend a child-abuser you suspect to be guilty? Or what do you say when someone is sentenced to 10 years who you believe to be innocent? And why do they wear those stupid wigs? Well, the Secret Barrister aims to show you what it’s really like inside the criminal justice system and why it matters. The world of the Secret Barrister is full of stories, oftentimes funny and ridiculous, but ultimately life-changing. ![]() ![]() The job of a barrister requires a variety of skills, whether it’s being a social worker, a relationship counselor, an accountant, a coffee supplier, and even an accountant, a barrister must wear many hats inside and outside of the courtroom. ![]() ![]() "Everything has been a nod to 'birds of prey' and all about feather-inspired textures and colors. In the case of Jurnee Smollett-Bell, however, the avian inspiration has also extended into her beauty looks, said New York City-based makeup artist Vincent Oquendo, who spilled the details to POPSUGAR about the glittering gunmetal winged shadow he created for her for the world premiere. For the film's press tour, the cast seem to be taking the title of the movie and using it as inspiration for their fashion choices, whether that means a feather trim on a skirt or a hint of ostrich plumes peeking out from under a peplum. ![]() There were a lot of feathers at the Birds of Prey world premiere in London - and I'm not trying to be cheeky or make puns.
